A Break from Social Media

Typically when I create my blog posts I try to keep them lighthearted, but I have just not been feeling it. A lot of the recent news in the world has been sorrowful and disheartening and that is something I desperately needed a break from.

I have previously had qualms with Instagram, from feeling exhausted from the excessive flicking through stories and posts, to the fact that it’s platform seems to encourage unhealthy, volatile, and upsetting discourse, and although my current issue isn’t one that can be fixed by the platform, I still felt deleting it would be the best thing for me to do for myself, at least for the time being.

So, for whatever reason you may be considering or already discontinuing your social media (temporarily or permanently),here are a few good activities you can do instead of being online ♥️

1. Embroidering/ cross stitching/sewing!

I have wanted to begin cross stitching and embroidering for a while now; it’s something my granny always did. The little projects I pick up are easy to do and finish and are fairly inexpensive! Some of my favorites (like the one pictured here) I got for 50 cents at a local thrift store. If you’re not sure how to begin sewing there are probably some great tutorials on YouTube! It’s a very relaxing habit to have and I love being able to say I made something myself.

2. Reading

I used to be one of those nerdy kids who always had their nose stuck in a book but something happened- adult life- and I got out of reading. Now I’m doing my best to get back in and one of my major motivators is that now that I’m an adult, I enjoy annotating and truly analyzing my book and it’s various use of literary devices. That may seem like a snore fest, and I definitely understand, and it may seem like a huge task but I have succeeded in making it my nightly routine to read about a chapter before bed or smaller depending upon my mood. Start small!

3. Donating

Donating always makes me happy. It’s a great way to give back to your community. My school has various projects and boxes dedicated to rehab centers and domestic abuse shelters in our area taking dry food products and things like that. The items they typically call for can be found very inexpensively at places like the dollar tree or other local grocery stores. I’d really recommend it just to help out your local community ♥️

4. Thrifting- I love thrifting! It’s a great way to practice sustainability and build an interesting wardrobe ♥️ I would recommend smaller local varieties over goodwill in most cases, but you can’t go wrong with giving more love to a preloved item.

5. Baking- something else I really enjoy doing is baking. Whether it’s for my friends and family or myself. I particularly love making sweets and staples for everyone to enjoy like banana bread or oatmeal rolls! My family loves both these recipes:

Well that’s what I’ve been up to. I hope everyone will look out for their mental health and truly take a break when they need one, and when you do, maybe give this list a try๐Ÿ’• Wishing everyone a happy Easter, Ostara, and spring, however you celebrate this season! ๐Ÿฐ
